Abigail first started volunteering with The Academy’s Alternative School in 2020 as part of her placement on her degree course in Community Education at the University of Edinburgh. She took some time to tell us about her experiences.
“When I was first at the Alternative School it was during the Covid-19 lockdown and I wasn’t able to meet the students but I was able to help review and design some of the course materials for online learning. When I started coming down to The Academy I got to support the students in person and learn more about the Alternative School. I got to see and experience youth work in an education setting which was great practical experience for my university course. It’s also really built up my confidence. Emma (the Alternative School Manager) suggested that I could learn more about The Academy and its youth work programmes and so I started to go along to FooTEA club to volunteer there. I can see the importance of getting to know the kids and building relationships with them and I’ve really improved my communication skills. I was offered a job with The Academy to help in the summer programme and it’s been an amazing experience to spend more time with the young people. In the future I’d like to have the opportunity to support a residential trip with The Academy."
"We're so excited that Abi chose to volunteer with us after spending time at the Alternative School. Having her come on board has really strengthened our Youth Work team."
