Much more than football

Spartans Community Foundation is mindful of the challenges facing many young people and their families in our local area. We operate our facilities and community coaching programmes as a social enterprise, reinvesting profits back into the business to support our positive social impact in the community. When you buy coaching sessions for your kids or simply have a cup of coffee in our cafe you are helping us to change lives through sport.

Our youth and children’s provisions are always free to the young people who attend. This helps remove barriers to participation and the associated stigma of being unable to access leisure and social activities. The Scottish government has developed a small area geography to measure deprivation called data zones. Each data zone in Scotland averages about 750 people and North Edinburgh has 36 data zones. 14 of these data zones are in the most deprived 20% for Scotland. Some of the associated issues resulting from multiple deprivation are higher levels of unemployment, lower incomes (over 30% of local children qualify for free school meals) and lower than average educational attainment.
